Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the 1999 Women's World Cup
This holiday weekend is a perfect time for friends and families in three select cities to take in some women's professional soccer. The WPS (Women's Professional Soccer) league will have teams playing in New Jersey (against Boston) on July 4th; and Bay Area (against St. Louis) and Washington (against Los Angeles) on July 5th. If you're not in one of these markets, you can watch the Washington Freedom vs. first-place Los Angeles Sol on Fox Sports Soccer channel.
While you’re at it - watch for special events and activities celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the 1999 Women's World Cup - the summer long sports extravagancy was much more than just a U.S. victory and Brandi's abs - Marla Messing, Donna de Verona and the entire organizing committee created a world-class event that rivals any sports event the U.S. has held.
I remember the excitement around the opening match at Giant's Stadium with Pele in the stands as much as I do the actual win after a grueling match, extended play, overtime and penalty kicks finale.
As we celebrate the freedom of our independence, perhaps take a moment to support the opportunity women have in the U.S. to play sports professionally.
Enjoy your long weekend.
